The Power of Just Watching
What Horses Can Teach Us About Presence and Trust

It might be the simplest thing in the world.
Just… watch.
No talking. No touching. No doing. Just watching.
This simple advice, given to a mental health worker years ago, turns out to be a powerful key in both therapy and horse-human connection. And it's something we don't do enough in our fast-paced, goal-driven world. But horses? They invite us back to it. Back to quiet. Back to awareness. Back to trust built slowly, on observation and respect.
Presence Before Pressure
In the rush to connect with animals, or with people, we often skip one essential step: observing. Whether it's a teenager struggling with anxiety, a partner in emotional pain, or a horse with a traumatic history, the best place to begin is with presence. Not training. Not fixing. Not touching.
Just being. And watching.
At our equine-assisted workshops, we often begin in stillness. Horses in their own paddocks, humans nearby, simply watching. What emerges from this space can be profound:
· A softening in posture.
· A shift in breathing.
· A horse that chooses to close the distance.
· A person who starts to feel safe.
Why Observation Matters (for People, Too)
We often talk about “reading” horses, but in truth, they’re reading us just as closely, and when we observe them without expectation, we begin to:
· See their emotional state.
· Recognize signs of stress, curiosity, or comfort.
· Respond in a way that feels respectful and reciprocal.
This practice doesn’t just teach us about horses, it teaches us about ourselves. It slows us down. It makes us present, and reveals just how much is communicated without words. In trauma recovery, for example, whether in humans or animals, this kind of passive observation is not just gentle, it’s essential.
What to Look For: An Observation Challenge
Try this the next time you're near a horse (or a dog, for that matter). Don’t interact. Just watch. Take mental notes on:
· How quickly or slowly they move
· Their ears: constantly shifting or calm and still?
· Resting a leg? Preparing to move?
· Wrinkles around eyes or muzzle?
· Tail relaxed or stiff?
· Breathing: fast or slow?
· Blinking: frequent or frozen?
· Do they approach directly, from the side, or hang back?
· How do they calm themselves after a startle?
· How do you respond?
You’ll start to notice subtleties you’ve never seen before. And that’s the beginning of a real, mutual relationship.
What This Has to Do With You
If you’ve ever felt disconnected from your own body, unsure how to help a loved one, or unsure how to be around a sensitive animal — observation is your starting point.
At Horses & Humans Equi Workshops, we build everything from that place of deep, quiet awareness. No rushing. No riding. No pressure.
Just the power of: Showing up. Watching. Letting the horse lead.
And we teach you how to read what you’re seeing, not through theory, but through real-time experience and reflection with trained facilitators.
Learn the Language of Horses
In every workshop, we include moments of still observation — of horses, of the self, of each other.
From there, we build:
· Trust
· Emotional attunement
· Boundaries
· Grounded presence
It’s more than a workshop. It’s a recalibration.
